Your story is a part of you that you’ve chosen to share with the world.
It’s a reflection of your dreams, your hopes, and your desires for people to understand your gifts and appreciate you as a person. You wrote it to express your true feelings, and now you want others to hear what you have to say.
But, being an author in the age of small presses and self-publishing is about more than being just someone who writes and tells stories- it’s about being a businessperson. There are thousands of eBooks published every day, and millions already out there, and if you want your story to find the audience it deserves, you need for it to be the best it can be.
So many authors just put their work out there, relying on friends and family to help them edit their work, and while friends and family mean well, they’re usually not qualified to give you the help you really need. Can your mother really tell the difference between a colon and a semi-colon? Can your husband really give you the harsh, honest feedback you need to find and fix the problems in your story? If they can’t, then the story you’re putting out isn’t the best you have to offer.
And putting out less than your best has consequences.
It doesn’t matter if you’re Stephen King, or J.K. Rowling, or Michael Chabon, every writer needs an editor to check their work for the mistakes that creep in. Whether it’s characters changing eye colors or missing commas, those little details are important to giving every reader the best and most professional reading experience a writer can give them. Because while readers may or may not notice your brilliant dialogue and clever plot twists, they will definitely notice every single mistake you make, and comment about it in the reviews they leave for others.
Poor editing means poor reviews, poor sales, and readers who aren’t coming back to check out your next book. It means those hours and hours you put into writing were wasted, and it means that people who might fall in love with your work will never see it.
